Top tips for the beginner
Here is a range of advice and information for the complete
newcomer to genealogy research with some useful reminders for the more
experienced genealogy researcher.
-
Talk to parents, grandparents and other family members about dates, places and stories.
-
Join a local Family History Society and attend some of their meetings. You may even consider volunteering to help to learn more.
-
Make sure you have sorted out your record keeping. If you have a Computer decide between computers and paper and folders.
-
Check to see if any member or members of your family have already started researching your family. You could join forces to make things easier and to share the workload..
-
Remember that libraries have a vast amount of resources and can give you access to Census returns and parish records.
-
Obtain primary records for any references you find and check the facts.
-
Check for stories about ancestors with public records, archives and newspaper records.
-
Check out where ancestors lived. Find old houses and addresses and look at gravestones.
-
Remember to get info on all siblings even if you don't think you will need it now. When researching later, a sibling's tree might just come in handy if you cannot find your own family tree.
-
Be humble and share your findings with your family but don't bore your friends!
